Owing to unforeseen circumstances, I’ve had to call a temporary halt to my art work so won’t be updating this site until mid 2018.
I will be taking up painting again later in the year and will have some new work to exhibit on this website.
We arrived in Teignmouth about 10 years ago and I’ve been drawing and painting ever since. Having worked in London for the previous 32 years and spending a lot of time doodling during tedious meetings, I decided to put my artwork to a more practical and enjoyable use.
I hope you will enjoy browsing this site and perhaps see why Teignmouth and the surrounding area is such a fantastic place to live as an artist.
I like painting in watercolour. A lot of people say it is the most difficult medium but I suppose it’s what you are used to. By using watercolour most of the time, one starts to learn how it behaves when applied in certain ways and on different types of paper.
For example if I want to do a particularly detailed ‘ultra realistic’ work I am most likely to use a very smooth, hot pressed paper such as that produced by Arches. For outdoor work and for rapid sketches where time is limited, I prefer a rough paper. Although expensive, a heavyweight paper such as 300 or even 400lb is by far my favourite as it is very forgiving and won’t deform even when thoroughly wetted.

This was inspired by a trip to the Pindos Mountains in northern Greece. This area suffered more than its fair share of trauma during WWII and the area still suffers from poverty and abandonment
